I don't think that assessment is quite right. IMO, you have to get the 'PRO' 360 package. It is a necessity to have a harddrive in a console. And to buy that 20Gig harddrive separately, it's $100 (therefore it makes sense to just get the 'PRO' 360 package). So for $400 USD you get the 360 w/ a harddrive, but no HD-DVD drive. If you want the HD-dvd, you are paying an additional $200 and the total of $600. For $500 USD, you get a blu-ray player and a 20Gig drive (which I believe can easily be swapped out for any off the shelf drive that has 80, or 100 Gigs of capacity). Another option, is to get the 'premimum' 60Gig drive +wifi version of the PS3 for $600.
Also, the HD-dvd add-on thing is weak. I would prefer to just have 1 unit. Wait till they release a 'PRO+HD' version of the 360 that has an internal HD-DVD player. This version will probably have the HDMI goodness, too.
