I also noticed while looking at houses online, pretty much all of them had huge security gates and so on even saw one that had razor wire across the top of the fence. LoL sorry but that's doesn't seem like it's normal to me.

The whole notion of "the ones that don't have it are the targets" tells me a lot. I was planning on checking the place out, but just seems like if crime is going to be a issue especially gang crime, then I'm not going to waste my time.
Costa Rica is classified a third world country by the United Nations. You're not going to get US-style living here. Not bad, just different. Once you get over the differences in the way things are here socially, you don't even notice the razor wire anymore =). If you're looking for the same standard of living that you're getting in the US, you're not going to get it here. There isn't a police presence in costa rica like that in the US. Because of that extra security measures (such as bars and razor wire, as well as pump-shotgun weilding guards outside of banks) are here. I have no problem strolling out of my complex at 11 at night to go to the store to get some soda or whatever, it's all about where you live. Obviously you're not going to move into some neighborhood where they're going to mug and shoot you the minute they see a gringo. But that goes for everywhere. If i was back in california I wouldn't be walking around the ghetto in inglewood at 11 at night, my cracker ass would get shot. You basically have to take the advantages of living here along with the distadvantages. I feel perfectly safe here.
