i suppose it depends on how much you want to spend, but you shouldn't have any trouble transferring her old mac's apps and files to a newer mac, many of the programs she currently uses will probably already be on the newer mac preinstalled and in the latest version. older version of programs that ran on a mac before can still run on a mac now (unless she uses the Classic 9 OS for anything, which i doubt).

macbooks are sexy but everything is kind of expensive new. you might look into getting her a macbook 13" or a macbook pro 15" from somewhere like craigslist or eBay for less money.

i wouldn't recommend a g5 tower (which i doubt you're considering if you don't want to spend a lot of cash) because some applications don't have support in that environment yet. hope something in here helped!
