Sure ants are food. Anything that's living is food for something.
Ants release pheromones just about everywhere they walk and on just about every thing... it's one of the way they communicated to one another... ever see a line of ants you just stepped on and notice how they all get panic-striken down the line? That's because they can, literally, smell the panic of ants next to them, get paniced themselves, and cause the ants next to them to smell the panic, etc etc.
The release pheromones for everything from "oh crap" to "mm... there's water or food this-a-way"... so wherever they walk, it's covered with "ant B.O."
Soap and warm water would take care of that, though.
As far as keeping them out... perimeter pesticides work great in my experience.
