Freemasons are like any other fringe group you see in the world today. Some chapters are made up of very powerful people who use the masons as their meeting and collaborating point. Others are innefective groups of, well, losers, who simply want to belong.
They have nowhere near the power they used to have. When mass communications became available to the masses, the closed door meetings between smallish groups of influential people fell by the wayside..
For most chapters it's more like a private club. For a few, they still have a strong power base. In aggragate, they aren't very powerful except as a voting block - much like any other voting block.
