Not to mention the fact that civil unions provide zero FEDERAL protections, and if the couple is out of the state, their union dissolves.
So if I live in Vermont, and have a civil union there (as it's one of the few places in the country that such unions exist), and my partner and I travel to New York, ALL of our protections vanish, and our civil union isn't recognized.
Imagine getting married in California, and you and your wife go on vacation to florida, where you're no longer married anymore?
