I don't want "special laws". And I don't need "protecting" the way you're making it out to be.

Do you know what I DO need?

I need the right to jointly file our taxes together.
I need the right to get spousal benefits for healthcare.
I need the right to visit my partner in the hospital should he get sick.
I need the right to make decisions about his care should he not be able to.
I need the right to bury him should he die.
I need the right to inherit the house we share together without being taxed out of it.

Gays don't want "special laws", gays want access to the same laws (over 1,200 of them) that are on the books to protect married couples, and allow them to support each other throughout life.

It takes thousands and thousands of dollars to have contracts drawn up to just TRY to get SOME of the basic rights that a heterosexual couple gets from a $50 marriage license. And even then, in many states, those contracts are easily overturned by families that "don't agree with the gay lifestyle" that their child or sibling has lived. Even other states have laws that expressly forbid the types of contracts necessary from even being valid at all.

Imagine spending 20 years with your wife, and she dies, and you can't even attend her funeral because her parents don't like you? Imagine spending 20 years with your wife, and she's in a car accident, and you can't visit her in the hospital because her parents won't let you.

All gays want, is to be able to care for those we've dedicated to spend our lives with.
Very compelling arguments.
