It won't take off the original paint unless you actually scrub hard... i mean scrub hard in the same spot over and over. I've done it a million times... so had my brother, never had the original paint come off. As soon as the lacquer thinner hits the pole paint it will come off... just wipe it off.

As for rubbing compound idea.... It won't work. You'll be scrubbing all day and the poll paint won't come off. Not to mention you'll swirl up your car paint if you keep rubbing and rubbing it on your car b/c of the grit in it. You'd need to high speed buff it to get the swirls out.
