I remember back when sex ed meant learning about the biology of reproduction, detailed explanation of STDs (their symptoms, transmission, and cures -- or lack thereof!), as well as birth control methods (including opening up condoms and learning how to properly use them), and that was pretty much it. They also mentioned oral and anal sex, but mostly to instill the fact that condoms are still needed to prevent transmission of STDs in those cases. Little or no moral discussion about sex, since in the end, that is (and should be) left to the parents.

I think the above is fairly appropriate to discuss with a 12 year old, before they get the wrong idea from media, including the Internet. Around that age everyone starts to explore sexuality, at least in their minds. That's just a normal part of growing up.
