I ordered the HD satellite and DVR receiver package from Direct TV after I bought my LCD and there was an HDMI cable included inside the box with the DVR, so luckily I didn't have to buy one at all.

my friend used to work at an electornics/car stereo store and told me basically what you said is true, with some exceptions. sure, most of the "name brand" cables you buy are just as good as teh generic ones off ebay. however, with some like monster, they have the fibers spun more tightly and use a grounding cable down teh center to prevent some distortion.
i have noticed a difference myself between a generic hdmi cable and the monster hdmi cable.
