Again and if you read you will see that these types of promotions are focused at Brand Aware companies.
People who are actually trying to build a brand for their product that people will associate with... somethihng like Sex Search, Hot Movies, Adult Rental, or a perfect example would be Playboy.
In these situations "merely being recognized" as you put it is the whole point.
Giving consumers a reason to pick your product off of the virtual shelf when they are faced with a choice.
Although on a side note regarding getting traffic to a website. While we were promoting on the beach last year we took photos of all of the students we encountered and gave them a biz card that directed them to find their photos here:

We did know other advertising for this site and got 77.000 unique visitors to our site (and counting). So with the right call to action these promotions are actually very affective for driving traffic too.
We can even collect profiles and free signups from the bar every night. The possibilities are actually endless Reynold. You just have to have an offline marketing background to appreciate what this type of promotin can do for a product.
The more outside the box you get the better results you will have also!
