my father is a brown bear guide in alaska as were many of my friends. i grew up in alaska. where we used to commercial salmon fish in the summer down on the alaska peninsula (port moller) - brown bears are like rats. everywhere. every night they would come down out of the brush and start cruising the beaches looking for dead shit to eat (seals, sea lions, salmon - whatever) and were all around the house. we had one shack that over looked the beach and we put fish right in front of it, climbed up on the roof and waited. finally 2 bears came and we started screwing with them until one came up to us, on his hind legs trying to get a closer look. we emptied a can of it right into his face and it did absolutely nothing. just pissed it off.
that being said, i have spent the first 20 years of my life in those surroundings, not to mention continually hunting. i have seen bears take a shitload of abuse. my father shot one once 8 or 10 times with a 300 magnum before it stopped and died. i saw another one get shot 6 times with a .12 gauge - 3 slugs, 3 with buckshot... as it charged us. blew all the skin right off his face.
the idea of relying on spraying a bear with mace when being attacked is exactly like telling a woman "yeah, just kick the guy in the nuts" - respond to agression with agression... and you get 2 times more agression in return. every single time.
