Of course you can trademark a common name - take for example Apple. There are around 12 different valid trademarks for Apple. Each one from a different company. If I wanted to start a company called Apple, Inc. selling peanuts to pigmy elephants, I could register Apple as a trademark and there is nothing any of the Apple's could do.
