It isn't that simple. If you own joeblow.com and someone else registers joeblow.xxx, you can of course do nothing, hope that typein traffic loss is minimal and that .xxx is
never made mandatory. What you would be very foolish to do is let joeblow.xxx operate for years, intending only to bring a trademark at a later date if circumstances change. Assuming the courts would ordinarily agree that you do indeed have a trademark claim, they still take a dim view of people who do not defend their trademarks vigorously and consistently.
My thoughts on reading your original post were that even if you had the list and made it public, I doubt there would be any surprises and at most, the impact might be a few days of drama on the boards.
It is to be expected that an industry only beginning to emerge from the "gold rush" stage, is still populated largely by short-term thinkers with limited ambition and imagination. Still it never ceases to amaze me that if you were to invite only those who have tried to make their voices heard about any of the serious issues which have affected this industry to date, it would be hard to fill a large conference room.
