I find Japanese beers to be closer to European beers than to American beers, inasmuch as they have more flavor and character than typically bland American beers made by the big breweries.
Don't get me wrong, America has some great beers (Gordon Biersh, Pyramid, Anchor Steam, etc), but the best tasting ones are typically micro-brewery beers.
The three most popular Japanese brands, Kirin, Sapporo, and Asahi, all have distinctive flavors, plus each of those breweries produce more than one beer.
Go wild sometime and try them...especially when having Japanese food - they just seem to go well with the cuisine.
