Sorry, no sale.

A different question that could be asked is --- Are all welfare people really "less fortunate", or are they people who are simply too lazy to make their own fortune?

Case in point -- My being able to quit my job nearly 9 years ago and work from home for myself full time didn't just "happen"... I won no lottery or anything. I had to go out and get myself some extra education in order to get started in the direction that later led me to achieving that goal.

I'm sure many on this board have similar circumstances to share.

You know, there are programs available to the "less fortunate" that are government funded and designed to help them get back into the workforce and being productive again. All one need do is look for them, things like "Job-reentry programs", GED courses and the like. They have them here, I'm sure other areas have them as well.

There are cases where certain people do have legitimate reasons for their situation, but I think most of us are fed up with those who abuse the system and leech off society needlessly and pop out kids in order to further leech etc, and I think in those cases the concern is warranted.
The thing people are missing about what I'm saying is that I am not making the welfare person equal to the working person paying taxes.

I'm saying that single people with no kids do the same work but don't get those breaks. So people who get those breaks are often complaining about other people getting breaks.

I'm not saying these tax deductions are wrong.

I'm saying "Hey Mister-Hard-Working-Dude with 3 kids you're getting more breaks than me with no kids. So if you can bitch about welfare breaks then I can bitch about your breaks since I am actually paying more taxes into welfare than you.

In other words, people keep whining about a system that is never going to go away. The government will have to step in in one form or another when poverty and unemployment get out of control. And what about your own job security? What if all these welfare people all of a sudden spring up with the ability to take your job? Right now you've got group of people who can't compete with you; do you want to keep kicking them until they figure out a way to compete for your job and win?
