He didn't say it was non-existing. There are tons of accounts around opened by sponsors and they look something like sponsorname_wmid, where wmid can be either letters or numbers. If the guy who was supposed to receive the funds had an account named sponsorname_123456 and he accidentally said he wanted the funds sent to sponsorname_123465 then it's fully plausible that another affiliate had an account open by the same sponsor and got that specific account. In which case the money went to an existing account.
