To me it's about what can be done with it.
I don't type in paypal.com I do x.com
it's just easier.
So if you are competing with the same content as bigmonstername.com
maybe you blow then away with the short name.
The best thing is to make sense out of the name as it applies to your site so that the surfer can remember you for ever after just one visit to the site.
