Most places and insurance policies require that the patient try a doctor supervised diet for 6 months prior to the the surgery, psychological consultatons, and attend support groups.

I have a friend that had it done, he was 650lbs., not a diabetic, no real medical problems other than his morbid obesity.

He had it done a couple years ago at the age of 44 (how many obese 50 yr olds do you see?) he had plastic surgury to have excess skin removed at the same time. The actual bypass went fine, the plastic surgeon ran into complications, and the whole peocess took close to 6 hours. My friends kidneys shut down and he was in induced coma for 3 days, he spent 8 months in the hospital recovering from pinched nerves and bed sores (from not moving for 3 days). He has had 3 more surgerys to remove skin and has no belly button and he will tell you after all he has been through, he'd do it again.
