Just met a US couple at the weekend (nice folks... but) - he was a surgeon, his wife a lecturer - and the dialog was something out of this planet. It's still a talking point among us today - can't believe educated/qualified people have so little clue.
Never ask about geography. It's just not popular in the US. Also never ask where the Caribbean is, or ask for something to be sent there - they'll send it to the Indian Ocean. Tell em Namibia is an up and coming world power and they will attempt to have an intelligent discussion over it - they have no idea where it is. (This can be fun at times

Sure.. not all people are dumb, but there is a high level of total unawareness, and the rate you will get stupid comments is high. Others are 100% sensible and have a good command of reality - they'd laugh their heads off reading the stupidity on GFY.
But hey... even the dumb can be very nice people and genuinely open and willing to help others - it's hard to knock that
