I believe the domain expired at Network Solutions (called NS from here out). NS then sends the domain name to auction at SnapNames. The original owner is then cut in for a piece of the sale. Ive been told it is between 10-20%.
So, the guy who allowed the domain name to expire - (may not even realize it was valuable) will be recieving a check from NS for around $80,000 (was the estimate I heard).
