Hip hop is very much like pop and country music today. All of them have abandoned the ideal of developing an artist (rock and alternative are guilty of this too, but not to such a heavy degree) they are looking for the hot track to sell an album as fast as they can and they don't' really care if the next three albums are not as big, they make their money then recycle the artist and find someone new that has the next hit song. Most people in pop, rap and country don't even write their own material. They are making songs that are really nothing more than 3 minute long commercials and that type of stuff has a short shelf life. Most of the bands listed on that list started off slowly and built a fan base over a number of years and they continued to put out good material record after record. Today that is something that really doesn't exist on a big level. If you want to find acts that consistently write and perform good music you have look for it because you won't find it on the radio, MTV or on any big awards show, you will find it at your local 800 seat theatre where a band that you have never heard of is playing to a sold out crowd and has released 4 great records that never get played on the radio or MTV.
