Don't take sleeping pills... try some melatonin. My mom takes Ambien CR and it works for a few hours and she still doesn't sleep. People are too pill happy these days.
Try a shot of whiskey if all else fails.

Tried Melatonin... but I guess it's too soft to make a difference in some case. I use it to adjust my time sleep schedule though. (it wakes up right in the morning, 2 hours of sleep or not!
Alcohol can be used as sedative (calming), however while alcohol may speed the beginning of sleep, it actually increases the number of times you awaken in the later half of the night.
