My son was left handed and from everything I've heard, including from my brother who has a PhD in genetics, it's inherited. But NO ONE on either side of the family was left handed for at least 4 generations.

Now it turns out my brother's 4 year old daughter is left handed, so apparently it's genetic on our side of the family, but either someone was forced to be right handed, or it took 100+ years to surface
