Well techinically the virgin mary was married at the time anyway no?.. I doubt she was a virgin. I think it was more the immaculate conception that they were trying to get across with the whole "virgin mary" thing. Bottom line is god swooped up the young woman and sent her back down bearing a less obvious 'son of god' than the ones that were here previously (cause that didn't go over very well
