haha, i'm shooting a .270 right now too. can hit pretty much anything on the run within 300 yards, that 300-500 yards running is pretty sketchy shooting. i don't like to take long running shots. up to 500 standing is doable with the .270. i don't particularly like my .270 that much though, would like to upgrade to a 7mm stw for some long range killing power.
i don't know if i'd want a rifle for home protection though. i keep a bowie knife between my bed and my nightstand. hopefully noone with a gun breaks in, i'll look awfully stupid shot up on my bedroom floor with a knife in my hand...
