If your so "qualified" you would "know" the reasons why shotguns are said to be the best home defense. I come from a LEO background and used to teach this to civilians...
1. Unless your in a mansion your gonna be in a close quarters situation 10-15 feet, 20 tops. You significantly increase your odds of striking down your target with a shotgun due to large radius of damage.
2. As mentioned above reflex shots will be more accurate over a handgun.
3. Shotguns are much more cost efficient, easy to use and reliable(less parts) to the general public because of the simple point and shoot of a shotgun.
4. And this is the most "Important" thing people dont think about. With a handgun as you only defense you have the potential for injury to your family and neighbors. Missed bullets dont stop for mere wood and sheetrock, they continue untill all there energy has been spent and I have seen cases where this has happened and collateral damage occured.
Also not all shotguns sold today are cumbersome, my riot style shotgun is compact enough for me to do a 360 in a small hallway. So in this regard it would depend on the "Type" of shotgun that makes it an ideal weapon. A hunting/skeet shotgun would not make a good home defense weapon.
