I think prostitution is illegal mainly for a conservative/puritan reason. People think it's bad to sell sex so they make it illegal even though it pretty much a victimless crime.
Drugs are illegal, at least the reason given, for the good of society. It is a widespread belief by lawmakers that if all drugs were legal we would end up with a society of junkies and what money we saved on fighting a war on drugs we would spend helping those addicts and paying the costs associated with having them. I'm not so sure that is 100% true, I think employer drug tests along with people just knowing addicts and seeing what it does to you would keep a lot of people away from them. however, one worry is that there would be an increase in "casual" usage. A lot of people have a drink a few times a month or get drunk a couple of times a year, but don't drink daily. There is a thought that a lot of people would start using drugs like alcohol, the problem is a lot of drugs are far more addictive than booze so they would end up hooked. Also the idea that it would cut down on crime isn't realistic. If someone is using meth and gets addicted they will eventually run through their money and may turn to crime to get money for the drug regardless of where they buy it from.
In the end I'm not sure where I stand. I think the softer stuff like pot should be legal, but I don't know if making meth legal is such a good thing? A
