It really depends on how well you market it and your traffic. I've found that the most effective thing to do is to have a custom theatre that fits into the theme of your site. i.e. so that it seems like it's actually your vod site. So I've actually got several theaters.

On one site it's just a thing on the side, free video pop-up etc. Got tons of members, but didn't make much a month in sales.

Next site I list FHGs which fit the look of my theatre and site, and another set that pushes the niche theatre of theirs. The FHGs that look similar to my site and theatre makes more sales. But even that one isn't fantastic when it comes to members that start spending money.

I recently implemented another one on a site that is almost all SE traffic, but gets far less traffic than the other sites. I have some "sell" text with the ad that push it as "my" theatre and outlines that they can PPV, "rent" it or buy it outright to download to their computer. Surprisingly, that one is racking up the members and people spending money. I'd make a killing if the site had more traffic.

So basically, it comes down to trial and error. I suspect it also comes down to the traffic. I doubt "teen" traffic would bother spending much, but surfers looking for "midgets" might. Comes down to that they can get teen content anywhere but not midget content.

I should note that I've never had much luck giving away the free minutes. They sign up but those ones don't seem to end up spending.
