First off, 70% of what locals? Which region? But let's pretend for a minute it's 70% of ALL the Iraqis and that none of those are saying that because they have ulterior motives. Why don't they want the US there? Because most of them see the US as being there and as the focus for all the violence and so think the US leaving will make them safer. If they're in a civil war as you've stated, then in fact the US leaving isn't going to make them safer. If the miltary in Iraq can't step up yet, then what makes anyone thing they could possibly protect the people from the absolute chaos that would ensue if the US pulled out? Just like the majority of the people in ANY country, including the US, the majority of the citizens don't have a clue as to what's really going on and buy into whatever they're fed. Just look at how the approval rating of Bush has plumeted. All those clueless citizens thought he was fantastic and now they think he's not. The masses are STUPID.

It has been stated plainly by numerous people there in Iraq that have watched what's been going on, that the US isn't fighting anyone, i.e. they're not on the offensive with a goal to "win". They're playing a holding action waiting for Iraq to step up. And why are they doing that? Body bags, polls, the mood of the public back home and money.

Iraq is a threat and worked with those brought about 911.. rah rah rah.. majority of the US.. YEAH! Let's overthrow Sadam!!!!....

Oops.. Damn.. we killed a lot of people, it's chaos.. our soldiers are dieing.. it's costing a shit load of money..

New refrain.. gotta get out... they don't want us there... peace and love in the world brothers.. rah rah rah...

US pulls out.. 100s of thousands die in the 10+ years of civil war. Iran and Syria supply aid and manpower to the fanatical islamic side which then comes to power and forms a regime more brutal than Sadam and as oppressive as the Taliban, which by the way, have taken Afganistan back as well. US threatens Iran, Iraq, Syria with.. well whatever.. those countries just laugh and say fuck you since they know even if the US invaded, they can just wait it out again. Iran becomes the power in the region and now toys with the US over the oil supplies.

Oops.. guess we made a stupid decision again based on emotions instead of cold hard realities in the world.

Just one possible scenario.. I have yet to see any scenarios from those advocating pulling out. I wonder why that is.
