I recommend either real estate or bonds. You said safely, and bonds are the very safe. There are several grade bonds you can invest in. Government T-bonds are the safest, and yield the least. The interest that you earn on them is published on the first page of the wall street journal, and is called the Risk-free rate (usually around 4%). There are AAA, AA, A, BBB, BB, B, CCC, CC, C rated bonds also. The A's and B's are investment grade, and anything lower is considered junk bonds, but can yield more than double the risk-free rate.
