The progressive programs (Civil Rights, Domestic Programs, Space Program, etc), were all Kennedy's ideas.
It is good that LBJ helped see through some of JFK's legislation, but the real legacy for those ideas belongs to Kennedy, not Johnson.
When Kennedy was killed there were only 16,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam.
The real escalation in that war came after JFK's death.
The escalation of the war in Vietnam belonged to Johnson, and his failed policy there ultimately led to him not seeking re-election, handing the White House to Nixon (after Bobby Kennedy was also assassinated).
