Arthur Schlesinger has opined that more wars have been fought between groups without a common language than between religious groups. The strife in Canada between the English and French speaking parts is a nearby example. I think declaring a national language of English would be a mistake, but at the same time I see trouble on the horizon with the grown of Spanish speakers inside US borders. Language usually defines the borders of a culture. People who think of Beethoven as their own will tend to be German and people who think of Poe as their own will tend to be American. It is VERY difficult for two cultures to exist within a political boundary. Before someone else invokes it, I'll admit that Switzerland is an exception. It's the classic "exception that proves the rule."
