Gingerbread is very popular in Germany, and during WWII Nazi soldiers referred to their enemy combatants (mostly the Americans and the British) derogatively as "Gingerbread soldiers", meaning they crumbled easily, and were therefore inferior.
In that context, creating Nazi Gingerbread Men has a certain irony to it.
