Here's my own philosophy on managing sleep disorders.

Try to sleep in at least 4 hour blocks. If you can only get 3 hours... Don't do it. Stay awake.

The theory is that, it takes 2 hours to get into REM sleep, and 2 hours to come out of it. Once in REM sleep, you can get 10 minutes, and it's the same as 2 hours. That's why they recommend you sleep for 8 hours a night, because it takes a total of 4 hours to enter and exit REM sleep, and it gives you 4 hours of full REM.

I have tested this somewhat, and have noticed that if I only sleep for 3 hours, I wake up and am exhausted, and feel shittier than if I just stayed up drinking coffee or whatever. But, when I sleep for 4 hours or more, I am just fine.

It is also how you mentally prepare yourself to "only get 4 hours" of sleep. If you are burning the midnight oil, and sunrise is coming up soon, when you have to begin your day... Go to sleep, and convince youself, that you are going to get 10 hours of sleep. This seems to help a little with the quality of the 4 hours of sleep.

In any case, if all else fails... go pick up a little pack of Ephedrine HCL, at a local 7-11. Take 1 or 2. But, do not take them consistently on a daily basis... You will fuck up your lungs. I took those for about 3 years, and was on about 9-12 everyday... When I quit taking them, my LUNGS bruised, and contracted... and my Doctor at the time told me that I was extremely lucky that they didn't collapse.

Just something to keep in mind.

Anyhow, maybe this helps, maybe it doesn't. Take it for what it's worth.
