PR also determines the number of times Google will independently spider your page - anything less than a 6 means that the spider comes by once a month unless it has followed a link from some other site.
PR is only one of the things that Google uses to assess your page and where it places it for the various key words that you have targetted. I've got a page with a PR of 2 but it still sits on the first page for a reasonable search engine term because that term appears in areas on the page that Google assesses as being important.
There is some talk that PR will become more and more important over the coming months.
