I wanted to be able to buy movies in UMD format and watch them while I am on the road. Now since UMD support is quickly dying, I have to rip my DVDs and put them on a memory card so I can watch them on the PSP.
VHS dominated Betamax because of the price vs benefit factor. Betamax offered better video quality but was too expensive for most consumers. Blu-ray is similar. It can hold substantially more data but when games for PS3 are going to cost around $90 a pop, I can't justify the cost. HD-DVD seems like a far more logical choice.
I do have to agree with you on the DS. It's my pooping platform of choice.

About being betamax of today.. I doubt that. There's some companies who've developed the possibility to record both HD-DVD and blueray on the same disc. I believe this will be the way things will go. BOTH the formats will co-exist.
