Of course you can develop mental illness at any time in your life. Just like you can develop heart problems, cancer, and other genetically inherited illnesses.

Tourette Syndrom is developed between 5 and 7 years old, but is considered a genetic mental illness. The fact that a mental illness develops later in life has absolutely no bearing on whether it is based on circumstance or stimuli.

Genetics play a role in almost every form of mental illness. Of course social environment can trigger these illnesses, but it is their overall genetic makeup that determines whether they actually do.
