Most people I've heard use the sell-out line are implying that
certain artists betrayed their core fans and changed their style to become famous (see: sugar ray), while others say it because they feel betrayed that the local band they used to listen to and hang out with at the local club bacame famous, and no longer comes around to hang (see: most bands that achieve any success whatsoever).
