You mean in America being liberal IS CONSIDERED to be close to socialist?

That doesn't make my statement less true. In fact, the American liberals would probably be considered center-right all over Europe.

To Americans, socialism is quite liberal. Any socialist type programs here are considered to be liberal and are usually created by those that are liberal.

In Europe, where socialism is more of the norm, capitalism would be seen as a liberal movement.
Liberalism, as an idiology, is something inbetween socialism and conservatism. Liberals generally promote capitalist economical ideas, while also addressing some of the welfare issues the socialists hold dear. Also, you have lots of branches within liberal ideology as well, one of the most known being the US Libertarian movement, which in many regards would fit into the neo-liberalism school of thought.
