(on signal)

true... if we were talking about an electrical current instead of a broadband signal. But we're not.

We're not? How does the signal get down the coxail cable then? It's a stream of data converted into +/- voltages to represent 1s and 0s for a digital signal, or amplitudes (hehe) for an analogue signal?
So resistance is going to play a factor. I believe it's called "SNR" in cable tech - signal to noise ratio.

DSL isn't capable of carrying more than that frequency because the wires are so small... cable has room for frequencies they've not even used yet.

Not exactly 100% sure, but I'm gonna have to dissagree again. It's perfectly possible for a copper pair to be used for more than one connection at a time - ask any ISDN user who places a voice call on one channel and connects to the net on the other.
The size of the copper pair has nothing to do with it. Either that, or fiber is doing some kind to Doctor Who tardis trick

sorry bro... in the world of cable.... a node is essentially just a fancy name for "an area". (yeah, there's more to it than that, but that's it at it's core) As far as the actual gear in that "node"... they can add or subtract as much gear as they need.
|
I was always under the impression that a "node" was a repeater of sorts that split the frequencies used for the cable connection and then passed them on, amplified to the head end equipment and the last mile connection via routers to the net?
I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time

this goes back to what I said earlier about being company dependant... if a certain area's cable company is sucking balls.... the service will too. But a company that runs a tight ship, (like RoadRunner out here) will provide exceptional service.

Depends on which side of the RR/AT&T migration you were on when Excite@home collapsed

as far as I know, the dsl companies still require you to buy the gear don't they? Or has that changed for the most part now in order to finally compete for real?

Some do, some don't. Some charge for install, some don't. Some rent the swtich/modem, some don't.
I hate my cable modem. But it's the best I can get for now
