Can't dispute your first three claims, but as to 4., why is it then that I lose my connection periodically and I have to get on the phone with a techie (much more available than the DSL company's techies, BTW) and reestablish my connection? These downages aren't all that lengthy, but they happen every 2 or 3 months.

who knows.... maybe somebody is rebooting on the other end or something.... try resetting the modem when that happens and waiting for block sync?

As to 5., everyone has a phone line. Not everyone has cable. ONe has to factor in the cost of adding cable service instead of using a service that's already installed and paid for.

but not everyone lives within 10 miles of the dsl center and hence, not everyone is able to subscribe. I understood dsl to need it's own line as well... or am I wrong?
Even farmhouses have cable now. The customers I went to do installs at that did NOT have cable... had a drop, and the house wired for cable for FREE, just so that we could provide them with broadband service..... let's see a dsl company do that.
