religion is such a crutch - reading this nonsense about the Devil i find depressing - i understand her not feeling good about herself and pondering the meaning of her life etc - but when they start talking like children and the make believe world of relgious mythology - no different than talking to somebody with a mental illness.

I'm with ya on that, Mutt. And as RawAlex said (hiya, dude!), it's preying upon the vulnerable. Personally I'm against anything that mind-fucks a person, and religion's at the top of the list. That it's a socially accepted, even rigorously supported mind-fucking makes it even more disdainful to me.
Finding Jesus is quite an effective conversation-stopper, at any rate... isn't it? How many people are willing to publicly dis God, or question someone's beliefs (regardless of how irrational they may be)?
On the plus-side for the newly converted, Christianity provides an instant social network of people more than willing to help out fellow believers in myriad ways. Anywhere a Christian sees a cross or a Jesus-fish, s/he can pretty much count on having a "prayer answered" (for work, assistance, housing, day care, professional networking opportunities, etc.).
