The last major step forward this industry made by itself was live video. Everything positive since then has been incremental.
Blogs, RSS, etc., have come along. But when we finally got around to them, on the whole our attempts to use them have been almost embarrassing.
If you want to be really cynical, you could say that GFY and its less extreme variations are the only really new thing in the past 5 years. We seem to have turned to feeding off each other, rather than looking outwards for real growth.
