i work for a bank and personally, i would call your bluff. i do it all the time.
we have more than 5 banks to choose from. TD, Bank of Mtl, Nat Bank, RBC, Laurentian, Scotia, CIBC, Desjardins, HSBC. Plus credit unions in the west, plus little banks like NBG (Nat Bank of Greece) etc.
As for them questioning a $4200 cheque... when someone tries to pull fraud on a bank, they usually attempt to cash phony cheques between $1k and 5k. There's been a large increase in fraudulent cheques over the past few years, so banks have had to increase their internal security, and make sure your cheque is a valid one.
Want less trouble? Go to your home branch where they know you. At 15, I was cashing cheques from xpics and ezgreen every month and my home branch never said a thing
