I thought it was pretty similar to Morgellons Disease when I first read the story. They often report of fibrous materials being excreted from various sores on their bodies, but since Morgellons Disease isn't really considered by most to be a 'real' disease... eh, dunno. I just think the girl is a mutant myself with the awesome incredible and totally awesome power to excrete glass from her forehead.
