I had to wear a full body cast for nearly 2 years when I was in my mid to late teens, after having spinal surgery to correct a curvature. That's as close as I've come to the halo traction.

But I looked after tons of patients that were in the halo traction, and yes it is quite a freaky thing to look at, I can only imagine what it would be like to be banged up enough to require it, and be in it.
