Actually this is a good article. There are several different types of LCD panels and technologies. Black can be black if you choose the right kind of panel.

I have an LCD in transit which is a relatively new one from Samsung called the 971P. It utilizes S-PVA which provides a higher contrast ratio (1500:1) and a much wider field of view than the standard TN + film panels.

I wanted to use it for gaming too, and Samsung claims a 6ms (gtg) response time. Guess we'll see. I still have my 56lb Samsung professional CRT, 900NF, if this turns out to be a bust....

Here's a review. I will end up paying a little over $300 with my buy.com coupon and mail-in rebate. SRP on this monitor is above average for 19" at $499.
