I respectfully disagree. Although modification of the web site is a part of SEO it is a much broader concept. Any SEO expert that is worth anything will tell you that Page Rank is an important part of SEO and some "modifications" will deal specifically with improving a web sites Page Rank.
There are several grading factors taken into consideration whenever a search engine visits a web page. SEO is broad understanding of those grading factors AND then the "modifications" can be implemented.
Search engine traffic is the highest converting traffic available on average. With that said; You can't have a site that says FREE and when a surfer visits they have to pay that will almost never convert. SEO is the relevance of the keywords to the web site, the prominence of those keywords on the web page, and the knowledge how to "modify" your web site to compete with the other 10,000 guys targeting the same keyword as you.
To finish the answer you originally asked. SEO is great traffic because the surfer actually had to do something PRO-ACTIVE to find you. The surfer queried a relevant keyword or drilled down a directory structure to find your category. Search engine traffic is much better than TGPs or blind links or spam e-mails or top lists.
With SE traffic my AVERAGE Click Thru Ratio (CTR) is about 8% for general targeted keywords. Highly targeted key phrases are as high as 50%. My overall Conversion Ratio is about 3.5%.
