cable: if you live in a neighborhood where everyone has cable tv/net (phone now too in some areas) it can really slow down your speed
DSL: your speed will really be dependant on how far away from a main switching station you are..closer the better, but you can actually get a more consistant speed with DSL..at least thats my experience..what you will find is download speeds are pretty similar..upload speeds are somewhat slower.
I wouldnt worry about it too much if you can locate yourself fairly close (within 1 mile or so) to the switching station you'll be ok.
I do have to say I've had more uptime with my DSL than I did with my cable connection, seemed at least once a week my cable (time warner - road runner) net would go down for like an hour or more..and that sucked.
Be wary of what the DSL salesperson tells you about speed, they really are just guessing for the most part..what I found is that the guys in the field that do the installs are the ones that really know the truth about what you will get speed wise in the area you are moving to..find one of those guys out on the street or whereever and they will tell you straight.
good luck!
